Planning your first trip to Nanyuki?
You’re in for a treat.
Set against the spectacular backdrop of Mount Kenya, Nanyuki combines wildlife, adventure, great food, vibrant social life and the wonderfully relaxed atmosphere of Kenya’s central highlands.
You can spend the morning watching rhinos, have lunch surrounded by gardens, explore the countryside in the afternoon and finish your day around a campfire—or head into town and discover Nanyuki after dark.
And that’s precisely what makes Nanyuki special.
It isn’t just a safari destination. It isn’t simply a mountain town. And it certainly isn’t somewhere you should only pass through on your way somewhere else.
This guide covers everything a first-time visitor needs to know.
Where Exactly Is Nanyuki?
Nanyuki sits in Laikipia County, close to the equator and at the foothills of Mount Kenya.
Its location makes it an excellent base for exploring both the Mount Kenya region and the wider, expansive Laikipia landscape.
For visitors traveling from Nairobi, Nanyuki is accessible by road and is particularly well suited to weekend escapes and short holidays.
Once you arrive, however, you may wish you’d booked an extra night.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Nanyuki?
Here’s the good news:
There really isn’t a bad time to visit.
Different seasons simply offer different experiences.
The generally drier periods are particularly attractive for outdoor adventures and wildlife excursions, while wetter months transform the countryside into beautiful green landscapes.
Nanyuki’s altitude also means mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea even when traveling during warmer months.

- Go hiking
- Enjoy horse riding

Visit Ol Pejeta Conservancy
For many first-time visitors, a trip to Ol Pejeta Conservancy is high on the itinerary.
The conservancy is internationally known for its wildlife conservation work and offers visitors opportunities to see an extraordinary variety of animals.
Depending on your visit, wildlife sightings may include elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and many other species.
It’s an excellent choice for couples, families and groups looking to add a safari experience to their Nanyuki getaway.
And once the game drive is finished, you’ll probably have another priority:
Food.
We’ve got that covered too—see our guide on Where to Eat in Nanyuki After Visiting Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
Experience Mount Kenya
You don’t need to be a mountaineer to appreciate Mount Kenya.
The mountain dominates the region and provides opportunities ranging from serious expeditions to nature walks, photography and scenic excursions.
Even simply catching a clear view of the mountain early in the morning can become one of those moments you remember long after your holiday ends.
If outdoor adventure is your thing, give yourself enough time to explore.
Don’t Miss the Equator
Nanyuki sits almost directly on the equator, making the famous equator crossing a popular stop for first-time visitors.
It’s one of those wonderfully simple travel experiences:
Stand in both hemispheres.
Take the obligatory photograph.
Tell everyone back home.
Carry on exploring.
